Breast cancer is a complex disease with multiple causes. The book uses a systems biology approach that combines genetics, molecular biology, and epidemiology to examine DNA damage, DNA repair, cell proliferation, and cell death (apoptosis) and assess their interactive contributions to the complex etiology of breast cancer.

The Etiology of Breast Cancer Endogenous and Exogenous Causes Fritz F Parl 9780615993737 Books

I am an assistant professor of health informatics. I bought this book to help guide my research on using machine learning methods to detect interactions of genetic risk factors in disease. I am struck by the thoroughness and clarity of Dr. Parl’s work. While providing high level understanding of the complex factors involved in breast cancer, he covers the current state of research with meticulous detail. His analysis incorporates thousands of research studies, making them accessible to both researcher and novice with his clear explanations.

The sheer volume of information, along with its clear exposition, makes this book a great source for those who are seeking to understand the factors involved breast cancer. There is much of interest for those who are researching breast cancer for friends and family. For example, the book has a section on dietary factors and lifestyle choices, and an entire chapter on familial breast cancer.

However, the value of this book to the researcher cannot be overstated. Dr. Parle delves into genomic and environmental influences on breast cancer, providing relevant background from molecular biology and epidemiology. The meticulous references are conveniently located at the end of each subsection. Links to internet databases of information on genes, proteins, SNPs, etc. are provided. The book thoroughly covers the many factors that are correlated with breast cancer, providing the background necessary for understanding this complex disease.

The Etiology of Breast Cancer Endogenous and Exogenous Causes Fritz F Parl 9780615993737 Books Reviews

I am a colleague and collaborator of Dr. Parl and hence, I am not an unbiased reviewer. Having said that, I believe that this book contains an excellent review of the work that has taken place over the past 50 years on genetic and phenotypic factors that contribute to the risk of a woman developing breast cancer. The book is readable for both of the novice and expert. It is meticulously documented (thousands of references). It certainly could be used as a textbook. I will use it as a reference. While it contains perhaps the one of the best reviews on the subject, it contains a paradigm for future research. In the Epilog, Professor Parl proposes models that incorporated estrogen metabolism, proliferation and DNA repair and are an in silico approach to gauging the risk of developing breast cancer.
