TIME Barack Obama Eight Years edition by The Editors of Time Politics Social Sciences eBooks

I thought it was a pretty fair and balanced review of the Obama presidency. It not only discusses key achievements but also failures, most of these came from foreign policy although he had some key achievements there (the killing of Bin Laden, the Cuban Thaw etc), as well as failure to change the culture of Washington. It would have been an unrealistic goal for any president although he did give an honest effort there. It talked of several things unrelated to policy (Michelle Obama's impact as First Lady, Barack's use of social media to change how presidents communicate, speculation on his post presidential life, even his ability as a comedian at White House House Correspondents Dinners.

What I found lacking was that it doesn't really go into who Barack Obama is as a person. What makes him tick? There aren't any testimonials from anyone associated with him about what he's like away from the camera's. That's something I would have liked to have seen. But it's a great magazine, an easy read. I'd recommend it to anyone. I'm going to miss him.

Absolutely a keeper! This truly shows the historical magnificence of the Obama Era and how we may never see another one like it! Good Job Mr. President and lol
TIME Barack Obama Eight Years by The Editors of Time

“Barack Obama Eight Years" is a brief, fair overview of Obama’s Presidency. The editors of Time provide the public in essence a positive synopsis of President Obama’s. This succinct 96-page is broken out by the following three sections 1. A Distinctive Agenda, 2. History In The Making, and 3. Beyond The White House.

Positives
1. A well-written overview of Obama’s Presidency. It’s succinct, accessible and done respectfully.
2. It has a magazine-styled format. That is, plenty of iconic photos that complement the narrative.
3. The tone is generally positive but the editors are also not afraid to be critical albeit in a respectful manner.
4. Covers a wide variety of key topics in short chapters.
5. Highlights key events. “Taking office in the midst of an economic meltdown, Obama seized on the massive federal response to make record investments in education initiatives, environmental research, industrial modernization and, most famously, health-care reform.”
6. The challenges faced by Obama. “Obama inherited the wreckage of what proved to be the worst U.S. recession since the 1930s. The economy contracted by more than 8%. Unemployment doubled, from 5% to 10%—a net loss of some 8 million jobs. Average housing prices dropped by 30%.”
7. There are facts backed by verifiable numbers spruced throughout the book. “According to the Congressional Budget Office, the recovery act boosted growth in the U.S. by 1% to 4% in 2010, with smaller impacts in subsequent years. That’s not bad by historical standards, but Obama was reluctant to boast; it was not the rapid repair that he had envisioned, and it was hardly enough to cure such a deep recession.”
8. A look at Obamacare. “THE president’s hugely ambitious, yet troubled, health-care reform. Rammed through Congress without a single Republican vote, the Affordable Care Act is Obama’s attempt to deliver on a promise that Democrats have made for generations medical insurance for all.”
9. Captures quantifiable accomplishments. “By the start of Obama’s second term, however, the White House’s economic maneuvering not only stopped the bleeding but appeared to jump-start the economy, returning it to levels last seen in the 1990s.”
10. A look at foreign policy. “Seven years later, as Obama’s second term draws to a close, the reality is more tempered. Instead of transformation, the most resonant characteristic of Obama’s relationship to the world has been caution pragmatism, realpolitik and an extra helping of wait-and-see.”
11. Obama’s failures too. “Many liberal interventionists, including Obama’s former top adviser Samantha Power, who now serves as the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, see Obama’s decision not to arm moderate Syrian rebels as bordering on a humanitarian crime.”
12. Obama as Commander In Chief, his successes and failures. “IF BUSH LEANED TOWARD A SCORCHED-earth approach when it came to military conflicts, Obama’s policy might be best characterized as a controlled burn.”
13. The three factors that led to Obama’s number one mission’s success. Perhaps one of the best parts of the book with excellent graphics and succinct explanations.
14. The president’s record on race. “Obama’s record on race relations was imperfect, but the symbolism of his presidency is potent.”
15. The evolving attitudes toward LGBT rights. “In 2015, when the high court issued a separate, historic decision, declaring bans on same-sex marriage unconstitutional, Obama ordered his White House illuminated in the rainbow colors of the LGBT Pride flag.”
16. A look at obstructionism in the capital. “From Obama’s first day in office, Republicans plotted a path of unified opposition to his every proposal, even those they had supported just months before.”
17. Fake stories. “The fight over what came to be known as Obamacare paralleled the rise of “birtherism,” the false claim that Obama was born in Kenya and was therefore ineligible to be the U.S. president. (He was born in Hawaii.) There were also unfounded allegations that he was Muslim. (He is Protestant.)”
18. A section on comic relief that showcases Obama’s sense of humor.
19. The First Lady’s influence. “The First Lady tackled obesity in America with her “Let’s Move!” program and her emphasis on healthy eating.”
20. A section that covers the main strategists behind President Obama’s Presidency.
21. The future beyond the presidency.

Negatives
1. A photo-intensive book and some good charts provided but very few graphs and charts that could have better captured key economic topics.
2. The book mentions the fact that climate change was an important issue for Obama but barely explains how.
3. I would have liked a section or a table that captured all the key decisions by issue.
4. This book is really a synopsis so it will lack depth.

In summary, this is a fun, fair and succinct magazine-styled book on President Obama’s two-term presidency. I’m giving this book 4 stars but I feel that I’m being generous. It covers a lot of territory in less than a 100 pages and the editors of Time Magazine did a good job of giving it glitz and enough substance to make it worth reading.

Further recommendations “Obama’s Legacy” by The Washington Post, “A Consequential President The Legacy of Barack Obama, “The Black Presidency Barack Obama and the Politics of Race in America” by Michael Eric Dyson, “Barack Obama The Audacity of Hope” by Barack Obama, and “Obama’s Legacy What He Accomplished as President” by Michael I. Days.
It's actually a fair description of the Obama years. Not all praise. Parts are insights into various situations and interactions with those around him. Some of it is repetitious.
Wish their were more pictures..... Very informative.... Missing #44 & his entire family.... Soooooo very glad I was able to vote for Barack Obama and also my Mom who is now 94yrs old. Once again, more pictures needed but fabulous!
Obama will always be my president.

I'm in the habit of collecting these commemorative issues of magazines whenever a huge event happens. This issue did not disappoint. I will and have missed this man and had the honor of attending his last speech. Time did a wonderful job capturing him and his 8 years in office. This is a definite must have for any Obama supporter.
Thorough,thopuhgtful
Enjoyed reading
I always love to make my connections with the face of Obama by my side, so I am reassured by the sight of him working at his desk, quietly and modestly keeping America in Forward gear.
